<lj:music>"disposable parts" and "sold!" - enon (appropriate, eh?)</lj:music>

okay, so i'm watching queer eye for the straight girl and, granted it's not over yet, but i'm extremely disappointed and, in fact, a wee bit disgusted by it. unlike qe for the straight guy (which has its own set of issues), the straight girl allows the show to be a blatant extravaganza of consumerism. this particular subject is really cute, has good-fitting clothes (though all black), and, honestly, a pretty damn nice apartment. she has nice furniture, an interesting use of color, and, although it obviously isn't professionally designed, it looks GOOD, especially for a single woman in her twenties. rather than allowing its subject a genuinely new appearance to offer to the outside world like its predecessor, queer eye for the straight girl gives the woman simply enough money to get a lifestyle she already wanted. what was holding her back was not an emotional block, not a fundamental misunderstanding or ignorance of what it means to present yourself in bourgeois society, but an economic deficiency. the new show doesn't even have the ostensible social re-education present in the first incarnation. the lesbian, filling the vague position of "the lady," is so femme that she could only cause the most virulent female homophobe distress and, judging by the reaction of this episode's subject, a straight girl interacting with homosexual men falls all too easily into a stereotypical fag-hag relationship. all the "gal pals" offer their subject is economic power.

i have decided i have a problem...with pocketing condoms. the problem first came to my attention while taking a pee whilst shrooming. i was in my friends' bathroom, saw a jar of condoms, then later in the evening i found a condom in my pocket. this action has become a full-blown problem now that there is a bowl of condoms in the basement of the campus center for world aids week. every day i have grabbed a handful and put them in my coat. yesterday, in choir, i took my ipod (thanks mom and dad) out of my coat and three condoms spilled onto the floor. boy, was my face red!

now, you may be asking, why is hoarding condoms a problem? aren't they free? and isn't that what they're there for? well, yes...however, i am not having sex nor are there prospects upon the horizon. so, the condoms will sit sadly upon my desk for god knows how long. well, it's best to be prepared, i s'pose.

peas.

for the record, i don't ACTUALLY hate grace tran.

well, it's almost the end of my sophomore year and my stay in the dormitories of macalester college. i'm sad to be apart from all of the people here but thank the good lord jesus that i'm going to california and going to have my parents pamper me for a few months. being an only child has its perks.

well, i should begin packing.

so, saturday afternoon i signed the lease of my first house. i'm living there with my friends lauren, joel, tyler, and zach. lauren and i have bedrooms and the three other guys are sharing the large attic. the house is incredible! it's the top floor and attic of a house three or four blocks from campus. on the corners of our block are a diner, a subway, a wells fargo (my bank), and a whole foods. the house has a large living room and nice kitchen. the bedrooms are decent-sized (well, bigger than my single this year). we have hardwood floors! the backyard is GIGANTIC. i've never seen anything like it. and there's a picnic table! i think i'm starting out sheltering myself in style. here's hoping it's a trend that will last all my years.

    <lj:music>"crying" - roy orbison</lj:music>

so yesterday, the weather has hit the high 50's and four of my friends and i decide to take a hookah out to the median on summit and have a little smoking picnic. as we're setting up, this little middle school girl runs over and sits right down. this girl is acting manic enough that i think she might be on speed and my friend brianne suspects retardation. soon, her whole posse of about 6 girls is by our blanket. they are convinced we are going to smoke the "reeeeefer" and one girl (the ringleader) fakes a call to 9-1-1 that we are smoking the "reeeeefer" and are trying to offer it them. most of us sit there dumbfounded but grace gives them attitude right back. case in point: grace - "it's tobacco, can't you read?" girl - "nuhuh. i know what tobacco is; we can get that." grace - "what because you're 12?" another girl - "you have an attitude problem." after i notice they all have the same shoes, they inform us that they are in a gang. eventually they leave but not before this little interchange: grace - "hope you get run over by a car!" girl - "what?" grace - "hope you don't get run over by a car!" girl - "maybe by the time we're in college, we'll have good comebacks too."

they leave and we have quiet hookah time, discussing kids these days. soon, we see them returning in the distance and try to avoid another encounter. this guy in a license-plate-less car pulls up and asks what flavor of nargilla (spelling??) we're smoking and how he hasn't hit that since israel. then, five water balloons are lobbed at our blanket, hitting brianne and knocking over the hookah. only one of them breaks. the guys in the car are yelling at us. "they went that way! get in the car, get in the car!" my friend jesse scoops up the balloons and jumps in. they find the girls on the next corner and pull up, cornering one on a bike in an alley. "i wasn't in on it!" she screams and jesse lobs one at her. he gets another in the butt as she runs away. the ringleader grabs a domino's employee leaving work for her car and uses her as a human shield. jesse hands guy-in-car the balloon and goes around behind them. guy-in-car tosses the balloon gently and jesse nails her right in the neck. she screams and yells, "we're only in junior high!" jesse, sarcastically - "i thought you were in high school!" (they told us they were.) jesse returns in the car and regales (regails?) us with the story.

later that evening, jesse and his friends are walking back from the grocery store and they hear yelling behind them. eventually the girls are upon them. the ringleader kicks jesse's ass repeatedly, asking him for a cigarette. she then grabs my friend paul trying to get his ginger ale, thinking it beer. the ringleader warns jesse that her big sister will be looking out for him. as they make it to the dorm, the ringleader drops trou' and moons them as they enter the building.

moral of story: middle-school girls suck, but private liberal arts students aren't above engaging them in gang warfare.
